Cruis Ship Digital Signage
Cruise Ship Digital Signage
Royal Caribbean International- Oasis of the Seas
FWi worked with Royal Caribbean to design a digital signage solution for their newest cruise ship, Oasis of the Seas. Totaling more than 300 displays, the signage network on the Oasis of the Seas is very diverse with everything from passive screens displaying non-interactive information to sophisticated interactive touchscreens providing real-time data and wayfinding. The content on the displays was designed to enhance guest communication in order to assist passengers while they're making their way around the 18 decks of the technologically advanced ship.
Guests are able to interact with the signs to get directions to their stateroom, gauge restaurant options and occupation rates, interact with the daily Cruise Compass to get info on the day's events, find answers at Guest Services, view spa options and pricing, and receive important safety information.
Features such as dynamic venue occupancy rates, shown through a color coded thermometer for each restaurant, are possible through sophisticated data integration between FWi and Royal Caribbean's back-end systems. Interactive mapping is another popular feature that is being offered on over forty 46" touch screens, designed to give guests step by step directions to their destination, similar to the directions produced by popular online mapping solutions. The digital signs also offer support for multiple languages, giving guests the choice between English, Spanish, French, Italian, German and Portuguese.
Additional enhancements were made to the software including mapping features like step by step directions, multi-lingual support, and BIZ TALK integration. FWi also expanded their sophisticated data integration functionality to allow for integration with Royal Caribbean's unique "head counting" system which then outputs the dynamic restaurant occupation rate thermometers onto the digital signs. For the wayfinding piece, Royal Caribbean originally entertained doing everything in Flash, but decided to use the animations native to the FWi software due to the superior level of flexibility they offer over Flash.
Interactive signage, in particular, has had a marked effect on reducing guest inquiries with regards to navigation around the ship, activity schedules and dining options. Non-interactive, scheduled signage has operationally supported Oasis of the Seas as it's been used to inform onboard guests of inaugural sailing events, production show times, and shore excursions (tours). Numerous media outlets have recognized the innovative digital signage technology on the ship and commented on the intuitive and advanced technology offered for wayfinding, event details, dining, and more.
