How to Implement a Restaurant Menu Board

A great looking and well designed restaurant menu board is critical for conveying information quickly and easily in today's world of fast-paced service and fickle diners. Whether your aim is to increase your average sale or your customer count, an efficient and attractive display will help you maximize your business to its full and elevate guest satisfaction and repeat visits. Some type of dynamic sign solution is almost most common, as very few establishments find it wise to chisel in (literally) their bill-of-fare. With this in mind, the following information should help you get the most out of your system.

Restaurant Menu Board Types
There are a few basic types that are common in restaurant use. No matter what type of display you choose, however, care must be taken to consider its placement, use, and design:

  • Letterboard: This type of display is often mounted on the wall above a counter and come with a variety of moveable characters (or slide-in plaques) allowing for some customization the menu. Making changes isn't difficult, but it can be time-consuming and characters are easily lost. This is often the least expensive style, but also has limited upside and may be inappropriate for most high-end establishments.
  • Write-On Board: Whether customized with chalk or dry-erase marker, this style encourages creativity and is extremely versatile. Not much more expensive than a letterboard, the catch with this style is that someone must create all the content from scratch. Some establishments choose to have a professional artist create a more elaborate template under which a staff member can edit daily specials or the like. Others choose to employ someone with artistic ability in-house for the purpose of changing the content.
  • Electronic Signage: The electronic restaurant menu board, although decidedly more expensive, is gaining popularity for a variety of reasons. First, it grabs the patron's attention, leading them to examine the display more quickly and reliably than a standard solution. Second, dynamic updating of the content and organization means that a business can post a completely separate display for breakfast, lunch, dinner, or even happy hour. When you consider the added value of animated or video content, the opportunities for marketing and efficiency are endless.

Choosing a Style to Suit your Business Needs
Choosing which style of restaurant menu board best meets the needs of your business can be a complicated endeavor. Some businesses have little or no choice in the matter due simply to affordability. If an owner is serious about maximizing business, however, the electronic menu is increasingly the option of choice. There are a variety of installation options, from a single standard-definition screen without animation to a full-fledged multimedia showcase containing multiple high-definition displays. There are also many software options for content creation and management.
